Microbial Indentifications and Gram Staining

In the Cruinn Diagnostics Microbiology Laboratory we use the Bruker MALDI-TOF perform identifications on isolated bacteria.

The technology utilised in the Bruker MALDI-TOF can measure the unique molecular fingerprint of a micro-organism allowing us to identity the micro-organism down to the species level. This is very time efficient and provides a much quicker turn around then traditional methods .

This method can be used on a wide range of microorganisms including aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, non-fermenters, yeasts and moulds. The number of organisms in the MALDI-TOF library is ever growing and currently there are 4,320 species of 712 microorganism genera included.

We can also perform Gram Staining, Oxidase and Catalase testing on organisms if the detail provided by the Bruker MALDI-TOF is not required.
